The boundaries of language and the boundaries of linguistics

Abstract
The author considers the question of the boundaries of language and linguistics, referring to the socalled full scientific theory. In the complex hierarchical-network structure of this theory, one can distinguish three levels: the philosophical basis, the interpretative picture of the world and the empirical part. The article focuses on the ontological and epistemological-axiological assumptions of the theory of language. One may distinguish between four ways of the existence of language reality, which remain in mutual relations (concrete texts, language system, individual and collective language awareness). Discussing the contemporary cognitive situation in humanities and social sciences, the author recalls the notion of paradigm and expression, and points to some dominant tendencies, among others, to the mutual complementation of reductionism and holism. Linguistics does not remain indifferent to changes in the language reality and to the scientific intellectual aura. It is open – its boundaries are historically changeable and always non-final.
