THE CONCEPT OF SOVEREIGNTY EMERGED IN THE CONTEXT OF MODERN STATE AND TRANSFORMATION OF THE SOVEREIGNTY

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 54

Abstract

The state structure of the present day has emerged with a transformation of centuries. In the West, the liberation of the political power from the influence of the Vatican was the result of great conflicts. In the medieval period, Papacy became a power-sharing partner. This symbiotic relationship provided legitimacy to political power. The secular power had to develop different theories in order to legitimize its power when it escaped the partnership of religious power. The most famous of these theories is the concept of sovereignty. In time, sovereignty has liberated itself from the religious meaning and acquired a secular one. Sovereignty, which was essentially in the hands of the monarch, turned into a concept to be used by the nation after the French Revolution. Thus the period of sovereignty of nations began. But globalization divides and limits the sovereignty of the nation-state. As a result of these limitations, sovereignty is moving away from its classical meaning. The emergence and transformation of the concept of sovereignty will be discussed in the study.
