THE CONSEQUENCES OF JOINING THE EUROZONE FOR SLOVAK ECONOMY

Abstract
The introduction of the single currency by Slovakia coincided with the greatest economic crisis of the 21st century. The Slovak economy experienced a short period of recession after which economic recovery stimulated by growing exports and investment spending in 2010 followed. According to the research presented in the article, the accession of Slovakia to the euro area after the appreciation of the crown led to internal devaluation and increased productivity of production factors, including lower capital prices and lower numbers of low productivity workers. The paper examines how the elimination of monetary policy and transaction costs has affected the competitiveness of the Slovak economy. Wprowadzenie wspólnej waluty przez Słowację zbiegło się w czasie z największym kryzysem gospodarczym XXI wieku. Gospodarka tego państwa przeszła krótki okres recesji, po którym w 2010 roku nastąpił wzrost gospodarczy, pobudzony wzrastającym eksportem i wydatkami na inwestycje. Na podstawie analizy zaprezentowanej w artykule przystąpienie Słowacji do Strefy Euro po umocnieniu kursy korony, doprowadziło do dewaluacji i wzrostu wydajności czynników produkcji, w tym do obniżenia kosztów kapitału oraz zmniejszenia liczby pracowników o niskiej produktywności. W artykule przedstawiono w jaki sposób eliminacja kosztów transakcji i polityki walutowej wpłynęły na konkurencyjność gospodarki słowackiej.
