The Correlation of Nutritional Status with Quality of Life on Elderly with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Interna Polyclinic of Mardi Waluyo Public Hospital

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus type 2 (non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus) is an adult-onset diabetes which occurs at about 80% of patients with diabetes mellitus. The prevalence of type 2 DM in the elderly is increased. The increasing number of patients with type 2 diabetes is influenced by various factors, such as genetics, lifestyle, age, obesity and lack physical activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation of nutritional status with quality of life on elderly with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The design in this study was correlational with cross sectional approach. The population in this study was 300 elderly people with type 2 diabetes who went to poly disease in RSD Mardi Waluyo Blitar. The sampling technique used accidental sampling, the sample was 100 elderly patient of type 2 DM. The data collection used questioner, nutritional status by using calculation of BMI (Body Mass Index), while life quality of elderly patient of DM type 2 assessed by questionnaire WHOQOL -BREF. The data analysis used Spearman Rank. The result of the research showed that there was correlation be- tween nutritional status with quality of life on elderly patient of DM type 2 who went to poly disease in RSD Mardi Waluyo Blitar which was shown with p value = 0.000. It is recommended to health workers to provide motivation to patients to maintain a good lifestyle so as to minimize complications and quality of life of the elderly either and for families to support and facilitate healthy lifestyles in elderly people with type 2 diabetes to achieve the most nutritional status according to age and ability.
