The Coupling Coordination Relationship and Driving Factors of Economic Quality and Ecological Resilience in Resource-based Cities of the “Jizi bend” of the Yellow River

Journal Title: Journal of Shenyang Agricultural University - Year 2025, Vol 56, Issue 2

Abstract

[Objective]Enhancing the coupling coordination relationship between economic quality and ecological resilience is crucial for achieving high-quality development in resource-based cities. Focusing on resource-based cities along the“Jizi bend”of the Yellow River, this study examines the coupling mechanism between economic quality and ecological resilience. [Methods]By utilizing the entropy method, coupling coordination model, and kernel density estimation model, the study analyzes the coupling coordination degree between economic quality and ecological resilience, as well as its spatiotemporal evolution characteristics. The study also employs the Geographic Detector model to investigate the driving factors behind the coupling coordination degree between economic, quality and ecological resilience. [Results]From 2003 to 2022, the economic quality index of 20 resource-based cities ranged from 0.093 to 0.296, showing a steady increase. During the same period, the ecological resilience index ranged from 0.416 to 0.616, exhibiting a trend of first increasing, then decreasing, and finally rising again. The coupling coordination level between the economy and ecology in the“Jizi bend”region as a whole showed a fluctuating upward trend, with a rapid increase from 0.465 in 2003 to 0.609 in 2012, and a slower growth to 0.670 from 2012 to 2022. However, there were significant differences among cities, with only Taiyuan (0.832) reaching a high coordination level, while Luoyang (0.770), Ordos (0.731), and Hohhot (0.728) achieved a moderate coordination level. The coordination levels in other cities were below the average. Lagging economic quality was identified as a significant factor restricting the coupling coordination level in most cities. The degree of urbanization and the proportion of construction land were identified as core indicators of coordinated development, with fixed asset investment in higher education being a secondary indicator. The study found that the influence of ecological environment indicators gradually weakened, with the gap in influence among various factors narrowing over the years, indicating a trend towards equilibrium. [Conclusion]These findings can elucidate the coupling coordination relationship and driving factors between economic quality and ecological resilience, providing a theoretical basis for high-quality development to local governments at various levels.
