The Difficult Relationship between Maternity and the Labour Market. Social and Cultural Conditions of Women’s Occupational Activity

Abstract
By setting certain standards of behaviour, culture and social determinants shape occupational and family reality. However, these patterns of behaviour usually do not have a general character. Some patterns are intended for women, others for men. It can be concluded that the determinants of social life, especially cultural ones, affect the pattern of motherhood and the sphere of women’s occupational activity. However, in spite of the favourable changes which are taking place, the unequal treatment of women based on sex continues to be a huge problem. This is reflected not only in the unequal distribution of responsibilities in the family, but also in the negative attitude of employers to employing women. It seems that a good way to change social mentality is to provide bias-free education, based on respect for the rights of both men and women. It is particularly important that this change in the perception of women’s occupational work is embraced by employers.
