The Dynamics of the Level of Happiness and its Determinants: Ukraine 2001–2017

Abstract

Since 2001, Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) monitors feeling of happiness of Ukraine population, which allows not only to track changes, but also to identify factors that affect happiness. We use the data of annual surveys (except 2004) to describe the dynamic of level of happiness of population of Ukraine (16 surveys). We interview about 2000 respondents in every survey. To measure level of happiness we use direct question “Do you consider yourself a happy man?” with answers “yes”, “rather yes, than no”, “both yes and no”, “rather no, than yes” and “no”. In our paper we present the dynamics of happiness level (the percentage of respondents who said that they are happy or rather happy) from 2001 to 2017. We study two types of factors influencing the level of happiness. First of all, factors associated with reality, such as socio-demographic factors and the level of well-being. However we are also studying the effect of the perception of the situation, in particular, the impact of satisfaction with various aspects of life on the level of happiness (satisfaction with family, work, security level, etc.) We also conduct a cohort analysis of changes in the determinants of happiness of young people over 10 years. We compare a group of young people (18–34 years) in 2006 with a group of young people 18–34 years old in 2016 and with a group of 28–44 years old in 2016 (this is a cohort of 18–34 year 2006 in 2016). This type of analysis will allow to separate the age-related changes in the determinants of happiness from the changes associated with historical changes.
