THE EVALUATION OF NUTRITIONAL HABITS IN FITNESS TRAINING – SHORT REPORT

Abstract
Background. The aim of the study was to assess the diets of people involved in recreational fitness training.Material and methods. Forty eight menus of men and women from December 2007 to January 2008 were subjected to the analysis. In the menus, the energy and 23 nutrients content were determined using computer software. The obtained results were compared with current standards. The influence of sex on the amount of energy and nutrients intake was analyzed with Statistica v. 7.Results. Insufficient amounts of many nutrients were determined in sportsmen diets. Both in women and men the deficiency in energy, fat, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, vitamin D, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folacin, zinc and copper were observed. Moreover, women diets contained too little protein, cholesterol, vitamins A and E, potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron. In whole daily food rations the excessive amounts of sodium and phosphorus were also confirmed. Conclusions. Diets of tested group of sportsmen doing fitness exercises in Szczecin were not properly balanced. It was demonstrated by many deficiencies and excess in some of the analyzed nutrients, especially in women. The cause of this state could be attributed to the lack in nutritional knowledge. It would be advisable to include the training in rational feeding of sportsmen within the overall training program.
