THE FORMATION OF THE GENRE OF A HISTORICAL NOVEL IN AZERBAIJAN LITERATURE

Abstract

The article reviews the process of creation of the historical genre in Azerbaijani literature and the ways of its development in the 1930s and 1950s. The first historical novels in Azerbaijani prose were created in the 1930s. This was a natural consequence of the national literature development under the influence of Russian literature, based on the interest to history of the nation. The emergence of a historical novel in the world literature coincides with the era of the emergence of romanticism and realism. In Azerbaijani literature of that period, the writers began to turn to historical genres, and dramatic, realistic and romantic plays emerged. The first historical novels were created by realist writers – Yusuf Vezir Chemenzaminli and Mamed Said Ordubadi. The first historical novel in national prose was written by Y. V. Chemenzaminli (“Between Two Lights” (1936), on the basis of historical facts. In addition, Anatoliy Zakhrabbekov wrote the novel “The Land of Lights” (1945), M.S. Ordubadi – “Sword and Pen" (1948), and Mir Jalal Pashayev – “Where does your path lead?” (1957).
