Abstract
Despite some differences in beliefs and ways of life, Jews residing in Azerbaijan with a total population of 16 000 are divided into three groups: Mountain Jews – 11 000 people; European Ashkenazi Jews are 4300 people; and Georgian Jews – 700 people. The majority of Jews living in Azerbaijan are mountain Jews. As already noted, there are only 11 000 of them. 1000 of them live in different regions of Azerbaijan, 6000 in Baku, about 4000 live in Red Sloboda settlement of Guba region. Jews residing here speak the Tat language, which was formed from the Aramaic Ibrian language, including some words and expressions from Russian, Turkic, Persian languages. The Tat language is considered a dialect of the Persian language, which is part of the group of Indo-European languages. However, it is completely different from Hebrew. After the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jews also began to form their own organizations. They have established the relationships with international Jewish organizations, and formed the cultural centers and press organizations.
