Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 47

Abstract

As literature reveals Turkish-American relations have been investigated by several researchers. Basing on this it can be concluded that the political, economic and military aspects of Turkish-American relations have been vastly documented. Nevertheless, from the educational standpoint, the literature on Turkish-American relations is limited with only missionary schools established during the Ottoman Era. It is known that Turkish-American relations in terms of education have more facets than missionary schools. This research deals with the effects of a large group of American scholars on Turkish educational system who visited Turkey during the early years of the Turkish Republic in 1933-1934. The scholars mainly concentrated on Turkish economy and yet they also wrote a separate report about Turkish education since a close relationship between economy and education exists. This research aims to answer the following questions: 1) How did the process of westernization and foreign scholars work in Turkey? 2) Who were the visiting American scholars? 3) What were the observations and suggestions of Hines-Kemmerer regarding Turkish educational system? 4) What were the effects of the Hines-Kemmerer report on Turkish educational system? This research employs the document analysis technique which is a qualitative research method. This technique follows the procedure of reading, note taking, findings (data) and evaluation.
