The History of ‘Berliner’, That Is the Lower Silesia – March Railway

Abstract
The paper describes the history of the Lower Silesia - Munich Railway, commonly known as the ‘Berliner’, which was constructed in the mid-19th century and linked Wrocław (Breslau) with Berlin. We learn details of the infrastructure development on this route during a hundred years, with special emphasis on towns situated today in the area of Poland - Lubsko and Bytom. We also learn about the importance of this railway main line for the economy and the passenger traffic in Germany at that time. In the between the wars period the then fastest trains worldwide were travelling this route (Flying Silesian, Fliegender Schlesier). The text presents also a slow decline of the Berliner, which started after World War II and continued in the Polish People’s Republic and in contemporary times.
