THE IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING VOCABULARY

Abstract
It is generally assumed that individual words are stored in foreign language learners” mental lexicons in the form of potentially complex networks of associational links. It is not yet clear whether the mental lexicon comes in two major parts, with a phonological /orthographycal code that identifies the basic form of a word and a semantic entry that specifies its meaning or whether it does it in fact resemble a large master file consisting of peripheral access files where information about the spelling, phonology, syntax, and semantics of each incorporated word is stored. It has been suggested that word frequency and recency of use are the two most important factors that affect the storage and retrieval of words in the learners’ mental lexicons.
