The influence of habitat conditions on the yield and size of selected plant indices of open pollinated cultivars of winter rape

Journal Title: Rośliny Oleiste - Oilseed Crops - Year 2010, Vol 31, Issue 1

Abstract

The aim of the studies carried out in 2006–2009 at two experimental stations in Glubczyce and Pawlowice was to evaluate the yield of seeds and selected plant indices of open pollinated winter rape cultivars, depending on habitat conditions during spring vegetation, as well as to determine the correlation between investigated traits. The study included 11 varieties of oilseed rape (Baros, Bojan, Brise, Cabriolet, Californium, Carusel, Digger, Libomir, Lisek, Remy and Winner). In the four periods (11 Apr., 25 Apr., 8 May and 25 May) leaf greenness index (SPAD), the green area index (GAI) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were identified. Significant interaction between cultivars and years of investigation was shown affected seed yield, the average level was 5.15 t∙ha-1. The highest GAI index was obtained during flowering (6.15). Leaf greenness index gained the highest value (65.0) at the end of April and then steadily declined towards the end of May to obtain the average value of 53.9. Green index (NDVI) showed the highest value in the early spring growing season (11 Apr.), when the rape plants create a compact, dense leafy canopy, and then during the extension of stem following the loosening of canopy. The investigated plant indices showed higher correlation with each other than with the yield of seeds.
