The influence of sowing date on yield and features of low morphine poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) cv. Mieszko

Abstract
One factorial experiment was conducted during 2008 and 2009. The aim of this study was to evaluate the Mieszko variety of low morphine poppy, which was sown at three different times: I – early, II – optimal, III – late. The results demonstrated that time of poppy sowing was essential for yield. Sowing at early and optimal times allowed plants to obtain similar level of yield, while late sowing caused lower yield. Poppy cultivated with late sowing had lower density and lower number of poppy heads. The after-effects of delayed sowing were lower height of plants, lower yielding and significantly lower harvest index. The faint ability of Mieszko variety to compensate yield components in years of different weather conditions indicated the necessity to maintain the optimal time of sowing. Poppy Mieszko showed significant stability of variety features, and perhaps this was a reason for highly significant determination of dependent variables. In poppy population plants with higher number of poppy heads were higher and bulky and this led to higher seed yield production.
