The intensity of prenatal exercise in recommendations from different countries – a review
Journal Title: Rocznik Naukowy /Akademii Wychowania Fizycznego i Sportu im. JędrzejaŚniadeckiego/ - Year 2014, Vol 24, Issue 0
Abstract
Pregnant women increasingly take up physical activity from which they derive multifaceted benefits without negative consequences for the child’s health. Regular physical activity of moderate intensity in pregnancy, among others, allows maintaining the body efficiency, prevents excessive weight gain, facilitates childbirth and shortens the postpartum period. Before starting any exercise, it is necessary to consult not only a doctor but also an exercise professional to choose the proper kind of training, match the exercise intensity to the development of the pregnancy and the woman’s individual potential. The aim of the study was to review the current guidelines from different countries on the recommended level and the methods of determining and assessing the intensity of physical activity during pregnancy. The Authors analyzed 17 documents from 9 countries: Australia, Denmark, Ireland, Canada, Norway, Poland, South Africa, USA and the United Kingdom. According to 11 documents, pregnant women should exercise at a moderate intensity. As for higher exercise intensity during pregnancy, the analyzed recommendations are very conservative and unsupported by scientific evidence. There is a need to update them on the basis of high-quality scientific research. The most recommended method of determination and evaluation of the intensity of exercise in pregnancy are: the ratings of the perceived exertion scale (RPE), the talk test and a reference to the tables of exercise heart rate ranges for pregnant women. It is necessary to popularize these tools among pregnant women, prenatal exercise specialists and physicians-obstetricians and midwives.
