The language of Cyprus and Greek legislation: similarity and differences

Abstract

The present article constitutes the first attempt in both Ukrainian and world Hellenic Studies to undertake a comparative study of the texts of basic and current legislation of Cyprus and Greece. Special attention is paid to the use of bookish elements from katharevousa by the legislators in both countries. The conducted research enabled the author to trace the evolution of thelegislators’ views on the linguistic norm in demotic. The author managed to reveal the causes of major differences in the language of Greek and Cyprus basic legislation as well as the reasons of their absence in the current laws of the past ten years.
