THE MYKHAYLO HRUSHEVSKIY’S HOMECOMING IN 1924 IN THE MEMOIRS LIGHT

Abstract

The question of the M. Hrushevskiy’s homecoming to Ukraine in March, 1924 still remains topical nowadays. The attempt to characterize briefly the above-mentioned subject historiography, to analyze the main memoirs, which give us the information about the M. Hrushevskiy’s homecoming to Motherland, to single out the reasons of such historian’s step and to recollect in what way his contemporaries valued his, at first sight, mixed deed is maid in this article. The historiography of the M. Hrushevskiy’s re-emigration question has already been very sizable. The foremost rea-son of the social scientist’s homecoming is designated as the glorious historian’s desire to keep on being engaged in scientific work on his native soil and to benefit to his Motherland despite the work conditions. The home scientists rely on the considerable documentary base which has the great informational potential in their scientific exploring. Along with this, the essential part of the available sources which need the further research remains out of historians’ sight. The memoirs and epistolary literature are meant. That is why the M. Hrushevskiy’s and his the most famous contemporaries’ memoirs and reminiscences which illuminate the re-emigration problem have been ana-lyzed in this article. The conclusion about the enormous informational potential of such sources has been maid. Be-sides, the memoirs significantly complete our knowledge in the question of understanding the social scientist’s home-coming reasons and circumstances and also in the question of the clarification of the valuation, importance and influ-ence of such decision. The memoirs allow point out clearly those internal motives which had induced M. Hrushevskiy to re- emigration: the huge yearning to go in for scientific work in the Ukrainian history, literature and culture sphere; the aspiring to benefit to Ukraine and Ukrainian people; the overall fatigue and disappointment of emigration life.
