THE MYTHOLOGEM OF TWINS IN HALYNA PAHUTIAK’S NOVEL «THE MAGNATE»

Abstract

The significance of the paper topic is stipulated by the fact, that the mythologem of twins in Halyna Pahutiak’s novel «The Mag-nate» (2014), which plays an important role in the artistic world of this literary work, has not been a subject of special research yet. The purpose of this study is to explore the genesis, semantics, literary functions of the mythologem of twins in the novel, its relation to the traditional mythology and also to identify characteristic features of the author’s neomyth. The study combines the methods of modern mythological criticism and psychoanalysis with the elements of narratology and discoursology. The novel represents three narrative strategies: the intertext, consisting of the quotations and reminiscences from the main character’s works – the Polish and Ukrainian humanist, writer, diplomat, cultural figure, magnate Jan Szczesny Herburt, the story of his ritual twin Severyn Nyklovsky, and also the author’s comments given in the brackets. The paper highlights that the motif of twins has been transformed in the novel, it has been enlarged with the elements of twin myths, the myth about Golem, traditional binary oppositions and unexpected parallels from the history of the world culture. All these elements form the author’s mythologem of twins in the spirit of Paul Ricoeur’s con-cept, represented in his book «Oneself as another». The preparation for the funeral mystery, where the remote kinsman of Jan Szczesny Herburt’s wife has to play the role of the dead magnate’s «alive portrait», turns into a difficult way of identifying «another in himself» and «himself in another» for the imitator. This process ends up in a delayed individuation.
