THE OBVIOUS NECESSITY: RESEARCH ACTIVITIES OF POLISH ETHNOGRAPHIC MUSEUMS
Journal Title: Muzealnictwo - Year 2014, Vol 55, Issue
Abstract
Museum Act defines objectives and targets of Polish state and local museums including ethnographic ones. These objectives and targets determine the identity of the museum. According to the Act scientific research is one of the tasks of a museum, however it is not a definig aspect of that institution. These research activities begin with the formation of a collection (i.e. selection of objects and their interpretation, exploration of cultural contexts, description etc.) and end with exhibitions and publications for general public. Each activity of the museum must be based on knowledge and methodology. Field studies are the starting point for the planned and independent collection of objects. Museum curators conduct academic research and publish their results. The research is one of the ten tasks of the museum. Another one which also requires scientific competence is teaching. Other duties of a museum worker is to protect objects of the collection and to spread knowledge about them. The identity of the museum depends on the proportional, well-balanced implementation of all tasks. The author also presents the financial and organizational factors that determine scientific aspect of the museum activity and some topics of research studies conducted in Polish ethnographic museums.
