Journal Title: Історичний архів. Наукові студії - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 19

Abstract

The article deals with the main issues of research of state formation processes and evolution of forms of the Polabian Slavs political organization. The historiographic models of socio-political development of the Polabian Slavs, the main approaches to determination of state units emergence time on the Polabya territory and periodization of their development are analysed. The diversity and mutual exclusiveness of the existing concepts makes the analysis of historiography significantly relevant. An important problem lies in usage of different methodological approaches without a single, generally accept-ed interpretation of terms. In the historiography of the second half of the nineteenth century dominated the concept of traditional, tribal structure of the early medieval Polabian society. On the other hand, in the works of positivist histori-ans, like K.Wachowski, O.Balzer, S.Zakrzewski, S.Arnold, Z.Wojciechowski even the oldest political units of the the Polabian Slavs were considered as formations of a state type. The followers of the Marxist paradigm, correlating the key moment in state formation with the transition from the primitive communism (military democracy) to class society (early feudal state), dated this process in Polabya to the period until the end of the 8th century (V.Korolyuk) or until the middle of the 11th century (G.Labuda, R.Marciniak), or whatsoever argued its completeness even regarding the middle of the 12th century (V.Ronin and B.Floria). Based on theoretical frameworks of social evolutionists L.Lozny, F.Biermann and M.Tymowski consider the lorddoms of 8th–9th century Slavic Polabya, as well as contemporary politi-cal units on the territory of the further time Early Piast state, within a chiefdom mode and its different variations. The article provides some critical reflections on possibility of the feudal system functioning in the Polabian society and on the leading role of chiefdom institutions after the end of the 8th century. Elaborating the suggestions of H.Schmid, V.Vaněček, V.Procházka, E.Melnikova and L.Voitovych, the author proposes considering the state formation processes in Slavic Polabya in light of transition from the traditional types of government to druhtiz state.
