Journal Title: Journal of Science and today’s world - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 12

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to explore the relationship between sleep disorders and clinical symptoms of anxiety and depression among shift workers and normal employees in Gachsaran oil and gas companies. To this end, a correlation research design was used. Of 2000 employees in the company under study, 200 employees were selected through random sampling using a list provided by the Employment Department as the respondents in the research sample. The data were collected using Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Back Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and a research-made Insomnia Self-report Scale (ISS). All of the instruments showed good reliability and validity indexes. The collected data through the questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean) and inferential statistics (Pearson correlation coefficient and independent samples t-test). The results indicated a positive significant correlation between insomnia and anxiety among the respondents (r = 0.5). Similarly, a positive significant correlation was found between insomnia and depression among the respondents (r = 0.5). According to the findings of the study, shift employees showed higher levels of insomnia, anxiety, and depression compared to their normal colleagues (t = 3.1, 3.7, 2.78). However, there was no significant difference between male and female respondents in terms of insomnia, anxiety, and depression (t = 1.5, 1.5, 1.9). In the same way, no significant difference was found between single and married respondents in terms of insomnia, anxiety, and depression (t = 1.5, 1.5, 1.9).
