THE ROLE OF MELODIC AND TEMPORAL MEANS IN CREATING PROSODIC PORTRAIT OF A POP MUSICIAN

Abstract
The present article is dedicated to prosodic speech peculiarities of female older generation representatives of British pop music. Variation of melodic and temporal characteristics and their influence on prosodic portrait of a pop musician are presented in the article. Mass culture is an important and powerful impact tool in modern society, and oral speech plays a big role in realization of image in mass media. The material of our investigation consists of British pop musicians’ (Joan Armatrading and Annie Lennox) recordings of interviews. Total recording time is 74 min. The main method of investigation is perceptual and electroacoustical analyses. The results of our investigation show that in general the speech of the older generation female group of speakers sounds calm and confident. However, frequent use of rising pitch, makes the speech sound incomplete. Melodic and temporal speech peculiarities presented in the article, constitute essential part of the prosodic portrait of both British pop singers.
