THE SKILL OF FORMING GOALS IN THE SFT APPROACH - SCIENTIFIC DATA AND PRACTICAL GUIDELINES

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 5

Abstract

SFT is focused on searching for individual’s resources, discovering various means, generating innovative ideas and testing new solutions. The basic criteria of valid functioning in SFT is the rule: “if something doesn’t work- don’t do it and do something different; if it works-do it and develop it”. Exploring expectations, setting goals, making changes and monitoring the progress are the processes of cardinal importance both in SFT and in sport. There are two main aims of this study. The first one is to present scientific data concerning goals: their predetermination factors and possible outcomes. In this part, the meaning of the variables which can directly influence goal setting-needs is developed. Two ways of understanding them are presented: needs as features (qualities) and needs as status. The consequences of learning how to change needs into solutions are subsequently analyzed. The data confirms that the ability to set goals interacts positively with self efficacy, internal concentration on tasks, higher engagement and persistence as well as more positive assessment of future outcomes. Such interaction of goals and psychological factors raises the probability of success. The second aim is to give hints on how to set goals successfully in all kinds of domains: sport, life, medicine.9 rules which might be useful in defining goals are described: - to increase the chance of realizing plans and acting effectively. The practical part might be expressed briefly in one sentence. If the definition of a goal takes into consideration the Effort needed for Achievable Positive aim and takes the objective as Small, Present and Dynamic, than the Beginning of the Concrete and important act will be closer for the agent and closer to success. Additionally, some ideas are given on how the process of setting goals may look like.In conclusion the author emphasizes that Goals Setting Trainings (GST) contribute to greater satisfaction and effectiveness and incites the personal growth of human beings.
