THE STATE OF KNOWLEDGE OF GEOLOGICAL STRUCTURES OF THE OUTER CARPATHIANS BETWEEN BIAŁA AND RISCA RIVERS – DISCUSSION

Journal Title: Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego - Year 2012, Vol 449, Issue 449

Abstract

The paper is a comment on current state of knowledge of the Carpathian orogene, concerning particularly the Outer Carpathians. Results of fieldworks allow critical approach to many earlier hypotheses on formation of the Carpathian massif as well as its geotectonic position. New reconnaissance of sequence of the depositional systems and sequence of tectonic deformation stages reveals a lot of mistakes in creation of some Carpathian facial members and so called tectono-facial units. The area of the Outer and Inner Carpathians, has considerably common basinal and tectonic history. Field analysis of geological sequences indicates that history of the Carpathian basin is the history of succeeding, changing in the area and extend, depositional systems. The Carpathian basin evolved in changeable, compressional and extensional tectonic regimes. The creation of the Carpathian orogene consist of many stages of tectonic deformation; “in sequence stage”, out-of-sequence stage and finally posttectonic collapse of orogeny. Process of gravitational emplacement of large elements of the thrust belt in the structure of orogene was very important for creation of the Carpathians. It took place during the stage of basin infilling and during the stage of thrust belt creating.
