THE TEACHER OF EARLY SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN – THE DESIGNER OF CREATIVE ACTIVITY – MYTHS OR FACTS?

Abstract

Teaching and developing creative problem-solving skills is undoubtedly a huge challenge for education. As the demand for thinking and creative people is growing, I-III grade school teachers were asked about the possibilities and limitations they face while designing children’s creative activity in the field of education. Open-ended in-depth interview protocol (Pilch and Bauman (2001)) was used as an instrument. Six teachers from Wroclaw were interviewed. They pointed out the importance of teachers in the education and development of the skill and they emphasized the use of appropriate (active) working methods in the process. They also pointed out that their role as organizers of cooperation with the family environment is extremely important. They evaluated themselves positively as the organizers of education and development of creative problem-solving skills which is regarded as a key skill in a modern European. In their opinion, creative activity is looked-for by all participants of education (both adults and children). From the perspective of a teacher of teachers, it can be recognized that the interviewed teachers are a good example of tutors who take care of teaching and developing this key skill
