The US position on Brexit (2016 – early 2017)

Journal Title: Eminak - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 3

Abstract

English-language press (The Guardian, Independent) is analysed. The position of the United States of America ruled by B. Obama and D. Trump on the UK’s desire to withdraw from the EU are described. The author drew attention to the fact that the positions of the two presidents and their administrations are different. However, both emphasize the importance and peculiarities of US-British relations. The article emphasizes that B. Obama’s position before and after the referendum in Britain is almost unchanged. He supported Britain’s membership in the EU. D. Trump’s position also has not changed, but differs from his predecessor by the fact that D. Trump supported Brexit. Several changes are existing in positions of two American presidents. B. Obama used the signing of a future trade agreement between the United States and Great Britain as a deterrent factor. He stressed that Britain would stand in line for signing this agreement after the EU. D. Tramp denied this argument and said that Britain would not stand in any queue for signing a trade deal with the United States. However, D. Trump’s position is evolving, than can be characterized by his statement on October 5, 2017. During this speech he opposed the distribution of trade quotas between the EU and Britain within the framework of the WTO. The argument is that these quotas are not fair for countries with a high share of agricultural exports. Consequently, the United States intends to interfere with the terms of the UK’s exit from the EU while respecting American interests.
