Thoracic myelopathy due to enlarged ossified ligaments (Japanese Disease) in a Turkish female patient

Journal Title: Journal of Neurological Sciences-Turkish - Year 2005, Vol 22, Issue 1

Abstract

Hypertrophy of the facet and enlarged ossified ligaments are rare and poorly understood causes of thoracic myelopathy. Spinal canal stenosis secondary to ligament calcifications and subsequent myelopathy is referred as Japanese disease. A 42-year-old woman had a 3-month history of progressive numbness and electrifying pain in both legs, paraparesis and bladder dysfunction. She was admitted to hospital in a bedridden status. The diagnosis of Japanese disease was made clinically and radiologically and submitted in that it has a rarely seen entity in Turkish population and large calcifications constricting thoracal spinal levels beginning with T2 were observed on MRI in our case although more frequently reported for the lower thoracal levels in literature.
