Types of 'Settlement' Nominations

Abstract
The topicality of our investigation is motivated by the necessity of an integral description of the territorial units in the Global English Language and discourse that is essential in ranking the territorial nominations and the objective English-Ukrainian translation. In the focus of our investigation there is the territorial nominations related by the common component settlement in English. The componential analysis revealed the semantic structure of the lexeme settlement in English through the dictionary definition analysis; the meaning components were singled out; the framework including meaning components was modeled. Some issues of area type division are presented in the article. Traditionally there are four area types: urban area, peri-urban area, rural area, peri-rural area. We have subdivided the meaning components of the lexeme settlement in English by area types. The dictionary entries do not provide the peculiarities of the usage of the settlement nominations. The corpus-based approached helped to reveal the features of functional semantics of the settlement nominations in discourse. The quantitative analysis of the realization of meaning components in the discourse was introduced. By computer sampling from the corpus the Global Web-Based English 5 744 439 word forms were registered that nominate territorial units. The quantitative analysis highlighted the difference between actualization of the components of the lexeme settlement in dictionary entries and discourse. The discourse register causes a shift of the meaning component in the lexical meaning of settlement nominations and the Corpus-based approach gives a possibility to reveal semantic peculiarities of meaning shifts of settlement' nominations in the ''author’s'' context.
