UKRAINIAN HISTORICAL NOVEL OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: THE PROBLEM OF TRANSFORMATION OF THE HISTORICAL TRUTH

Abstract

The relevance by the article is caused of the dynamic development of the genre of the historical novel in the twentieth century, its active research by leading literary critics and a number of unresolved issues. It is indicated that the genre nature of the historical novel, the transformation of historical truth, and hence the correlation between the fact and the invention (admonition), the proportionality of fiction and premise are presented as the most controversial issues. The researchers analyze the problem of the formation of the Ukrainian historical novel, the tendencies of its development, the modification of historical novels, their connection with the «gothic» tradition, the diachronic limits, polemical, philosophical, dialogic, multiplicity etc. It is assumed that the considering of the creators of the genre model are worthy. The aim of the research is to study and comprehend the individual judgments of the best representatives of the artistic world who made a significant contribution to the development of the Ukrainian historical novel of the twentieth century. Therefore, the task of the article is to track the motives of the writers’ appeal to historical themes; the process of the transformation of historical facts into the artistic world of a work; level of knowledge, knowledge of the artist in a certain historical period; functions of historical romanticism among other fiction works. Points of view of such writers as Ivan Bilyk, Pavlo Zagrebelnyj, Raisa Ivanchenko, Roman Ivanychuk, Volodymyr Malik, Dmitry Mischenko, Semen Sklyarenko, Valeriy Shevchuk, which were highlighted in the interviews, autocompositions, diaries, memoirs, reviews were considered. Such an overview made it possible to draw conclusions which explain the peculiarity and exclusive position of the genre of the historical novel in Ukrainian literature: Starting to write a historical work, the author pursues such tasks as: – updating the historical memory of the people, solving contemporary problems of society through the prism of examples from the past, comprehension of the historical development of the nation; – place of birth / residence, environment, that is, the close context, or a happy event (meeting, story, document, book, trip, etc.) which are significant in terms of history promote the emergence of a creative idea of the writer; – the transformation of historical truth into art requires careful study of the entire array of existing reference literature, documents of the era, archives, studies of historians, ethnographers, geographers, literary critics, etc.; – the creator of the past must know the national and world classical literature, language and culture of the corresponding era, must be a person with a civic position, also erudite, responsible for his concept person, who thinks intellectually, loves and honors his history; – the process of writing a historical novel affects the creation of new forms of expression of the concept of the writer and hence a change of his or her style (active engagement of the subtext, documents of the era); – the historical novel must violate the important problems of society, reproduce the moral and spiritual atmosphere of a certain period in history, reveal the psychology of that time, depict the iconic characters, figures of history, comprehensively and perfectly depict the life of previous generations.
