Understanding the Experience of the Early Turkish Republic Over Poems: A Comparison of Nazım Hikmet and Necip Fazıl
Journal Title: Journal of the Human and Social Science Researches - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 2
Abstract
Literary works give clues about the religious, moral, political and social life of their time as much as they reflect the art concept of the era. By examining the poetry of Necip Fazıl Kısakürek and Nazım Hikmet Ran, who were flagged to represent certain ideologies, this research depicts the religious, political and social atmosphere of the time they lived. In that time period, which even literacy level was below forty percent and still oral tradition was common, poems have turned into ideological mottos by their literary power and ease of keeping in mind. Many poems have been used as means of spreading ideological and social messages as well as some of them have been composed to influence masses. Therefore, it is important to examine their poems to understand how the experience differed among diverse parts of society during the early Republic and transition to multi-party system.
