Virtual simulation – a new element of radiotherapy treatment planning process

Journal Title: Inżynier i Fizyk Medyczny - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 4

Abstract

The processes associated with the preparation of the patient for radiotherapy are time consuming and require a precise alignment of patient position at every stage of the treatment preparation and its realization. One of the steps is to simulate the irradiation conditions. It is performed in order to check the set-up of the planned radiation beam relative to the position of patient anatomical structures. For this purpose dedicated devices, called X-ray simulators are used. Since the mid-nineties of the last century, more and more simulations of the irradiation conditions are performed during computed tomography, which is the basis for dose distribution planning in radiation therapy. For this purpose dedicated CT scanners, equipped with the appropriate software and upgraded with additional system of lasers, are used. This new procedure is called a virtual simulation. Its usage in clinical practice shortens the process of preparing the patient for treatment and increases the precision associated with the verification of the patient’s treatment conditions.
