Vitamine D et Covid-19

Abstract

Vitamin D is a vital steroid hormone synthesized essentially endogenously under the effect of ultraviolet rays on the skin, but also present in certain foods (exogenous origin), which has an immunomodulatory effect by stimulating innate immunity via the secretion of antiviral peptides. Recent publications suggest that vitamin D deficiency could compromise respiratory immune functions, thus increasing the risk of infection with COVID-19 but also the risk of severe forms and death. Vitamin D induces the proliferation and cytokine production of NK cells. It is increasingly recognized that vitamin D plays a role in innate and adaptive immunity and that it limits the unfortunate consequences of immunopathology induced by infectious agents. Thus, vitamin D supplementation could reduce the risk of development and severe forms of COVID-19 if initiated early, before lung damage; its effectiveness is not certain in advanced forms. It has also been suggested that associating magnesium with vitamin D supplements would be beneficial, because magnesium helps regulate phosphate and calcium homeostasis. It is therefore recommended a daily dose of 800 IU / day of cholecalciferol (or equivalent). Large-scale randomized and controlled studies, are to be carried out in order to determine to what extent the management of the SarsCoV2 pandemic could take into account vitamin D deficiency
