WEAR MECHANISM IN PAIRING GREY CAST IRON – AL2O3 PARTICLES REINFORCED COMPOSITE
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 224, Issue 2
Abstract
The wear mechanism of cast iron-composite material pairing was presented in this paper. Cast iron has been used for piston rings production and composite material for cylinder liners. The matrix of the composite is 6062 alloy and as the reinforcing chase aluminium oxide particles has been used. For an explanation of the wear mechanism the, Finite Elements Method has been used. Three cases have been analysed: first, without movement (μ = 0) and without the transient layer, second, with movement (μ = 0,2) and without the transient layer, third, with movement (μ = 0,2) and with the transient layer. Simulation with the use of a build model allowed us to achieve the distribution of stresses and strains. From the calculated distribution of stresses, it results that the stresses in cast iron near of reinforcing phase particles are higher then the yield strength of cast iron. This lead to accelerated wear of cast iron during the wear-in phase of the rubbing pair. The friction forces generate moment, which rotates the reinforcing particles with weak adherence to the matrix material. Particles are removed from the matrix cause wear of cast iron and matrix material.
