Journal Title: Dini Araştırmalar -Altı Aylık Bilimsel Dergi- - Year 2016, Vol 19, Issue 49

Abstract

Liquid modern times, as Bauman points out, are elusive grounds surrounded with infinite, fragile and indefinite possibilities that forms the status of all social norms, principles and rules. In the liquid modern times, post-industrial production system transforms social structures, diversifies and re-constructs the culture which is inherited from one generation to the other. In order to better understand this transformation process, the essential components of the social structure must be analyzed by exploring the different mental attitudes and behaviors of people. According to Bourdieu, the acquisition of durable dispositions constitutes to “habitus” and people behave by means of their habitus which constructs the schemes of their perceptions, thoughts and actions. In other words, habitus as a generative and unifying formula reinterprets features of innate positions to the combined form of life which consists of personal choices and performances. Habitus is a dynamic system, therefore it changes according to particular variables; liquid modern times as a driving force triggers the rapid modification of peoples' habitus. This study maintains that the habitus of urban and religious woman in Turkish society has been modified unexpectedly in the liquid modern times. The main aim of this study is to demonstrate the “habitus shift” of religious women and inspect the transformation of habitus from the “mode of life” to “lifestyle”. Hypothetically, after cross-examination the habitus of religious women has changed from the “mode of life” to the “lifestyle”. Methodologically, through a short content assessment of selected publications, the concern will be clarified further.
