Abstract

Adriana Bryk ARCHIVAL SOURCES FOR THE HISTORY OF ZDUŃSKA WOLA GHETTO IN THE STATE ARCHIVE IN LODZ AND ITS BRANCH IN SIERADZ The ghetto in Zduńska Wola, as the district for Jews, was already separated from the rest of the city at the end of 1939 and finally it was closed in autumn 1940. This ghetto was the second largest in Warthegau region, after the Lodz ghetto. Between 1941–1942 there were crowded about 10 000–12 000 Jews. The ghetto was liquidated on August 24–26, 1942. As a result, 175 of Jews was killed on the spot, about 10 900 were deported to the death camp at Chelmno-nad-Nerem (Kulmhof, in German), 1169 were transported to the Lodz ghetto (27 people died during transport). The archival materials of Zdunska Wola ghetto – the documents of Ghetto Administration (Ghettoverwaltung) and documents of the Council of Elders do not exist. Probably they were destroyed or dispersed. Among all the archival holdings preserved by the Sieradz Branch of the State Archive in Lodz, the archival materials of the history of Zdunska Wola ghetto take the second place. Introducing history of this ghetto using documents is rather hard and it means to glue together, gather pieces of information which is dispersed in different archival fonds and single documents. Sources to the history of the Zdunska Wola ghetto can be divided in two groups depending on the way they were made. The first group are written documents gathered in materials of post-war municipal and district courts, in fonds: Union for Armed Struggle, Home Army, district Sieradz (Związek Walki Zbrojnej Armia Krajowa Obwód Sieradzki), The Head of the Council of Elders in Litzmannstadt Ghetto, records of the Municipal Administration (Stadtverwaltung) including Departament of the Ghetto (Gettoverwaltung), functioning in its structures. The second group are non-written materials – photographs stored in iconographic fonds and in the fond the Provincial Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party in Łódź. The lack of documents of Ghetto Administration in Zduńska Wola and The Head of the Council of Elders in Zduńska Wola is sorely noticeable. Although the archival materials mentioned above are incomplete, limited and dispersed among many archival holdings, they are precious source base for the researches on the Zduńska Wola ghetto. For the researcher of ghetto’s history the archival materials stored in the State Archive in Łódź and its Branch in Sieradz can be a cause to doing research or they can supplement present knowledge. The attachment: The list of residents of the Zdunska Wola ghetto killed on August 24-27, 1942.
