1866-1869 Crete Rebellion and Greece: Determinations from Namık Kemal

Abstract

Crete, since 1770, with the influences of Samos and Morea Islands, the activities of Greek Etniki Heteireira, policies of Greece and the idea of Greek Great Design rooting from 1856 Royal Edict of Reform, has been a place where hosts to conflicts and thus, hard to govern. These conflicts caused the appearance of separatist ideas by following supporting policies and they also reflected the situation to Europe as if Christians were being killed, which resulted in the internationalization of Crete Issue. Besides, in this way, the role of Greece got shaped in the Crete Issue. All of the above were the inferences from the knowledge of Namik Kemal. In this article, we will try to clarify Greece's role in Crete Issue and try to present the views of Ottoman intelligentsia with the example of Namik Kemal.
