Journal Title: Journal of Science and today’s world - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 12
Abstract
In recent years there seems to be a decreasing tendency and lack of interest among Iranian children of age group of 9–12 in reading non-educational books particularly the story books translated for them. Main part of the problem appears to relate to the readability level of these books and the vocabulary difficulty due to the content words used in these books. With this assumption in mind, the researcher attempted to find the roots of the problem and find a sound a convincing answer. Through a contrastive study, the data collected by proper computer software was given to Flesch Reading Ease formula to assess the readability level of these books. By statistical operation, the word frequency list of content words used in both translated storybooks and standard academic books was also prepared and calculated. It was then concluded that lack of correspondence between the readability level of story books translated for children between 9–12 and their Farsi academic books of the last two grades of primary school and vocabulary difficulty of content words used in these story books causes readability problems and makes children feel bored and reluctant in reading such translated story books.
