A PROCURA DE UM OBJETIVO: A CRISE DE CONFIANÇA DA UNIÃO EUROPÉIA E POSSÍVEIS SOLUÇÕES

Abstract
This article intends to analyse the current problems of the European Union – in particular the obvious crisis of confidence – with the principal focus being the current problems of the single currency. It is argued that many of the current problems have their origins in the failure to establish a political union to complement the monetary union created in the Maastricht Treaty. To stabilise the single currency and, as such, the confidence of the organisation, the creation of an economic union is a necessity, in other words, the transfer of control over many aspects of economic policy from the member states to the European level. Bearing in mind the difficulties encountered since the end of the Cold War in establishing any type of political union, the acceleration of a variable, two-speed process of integration will be required.
