A RESEARCH ON THE HAPAX LEGOMENONS OF TURKISH IN THE BOOK OF DEDE KORKUT

Abstract

Dede Korkut stories are one of the most important works in history of Turkish culture and Turkish languages. The Book of Dede Korkut, of which we have currently only two copies, is dated back to late 14th century or early 15th century. The first manuscript of the Dede Korkut stories that is known is the Dresden manuscript. Vocabulary studies have an important role in the process of studying, analyzing any language. Dede Korkut stories are among the ones that were written so much on Turkish language and thus they are deserved to be one of the most important masterpieces. Surely, these studies have a direct proportion with the language materials that the masterpiece includes. Despite the numerous and productive researches made in connection with the text of the Book of Dede Korkut, some problems in this regard are still finding a solution. There was not carried out until now any satisfactory clarification as per the meaning capacity and etymology playing an important role in the stories vocabulary. In this article, the hapax legomenons of Turkish in The Book of Dede Korkut have been determined and examined. Literature review was done on research papers, etymological dictionaries. The focus will be placed on the etymology of the words as much as possible and the views of scientists will be considered and our opinions regarding the origins of the words will be included. As a result in this article, those two hundred forty one words detected will be interpreted in turn and after cruising the works up till today, the some new offers will be advanced.
