ABOUT GENRE SPECIFICITY OF MICHAIL KURAEV’S NOVEL “MONTACHKA’S MIRROW”

Abstract

The article is dedicated to the research of the genre specificity of a novel by modern Russian writer Mikhail Kuraev “Montachka’s Mirror”. The action in the novel takes place in the year 1960 in Leningrad. Residents of one communal apartments suddenly reveal that they have lost the ability to see themselves reflection in the mirrors not only at home but also in other places of the city too. There are several variants of interpretation of this situation. Therefore the author compares his novel with a suite because it sounds a lot of votes (musical instruments), each of which is associated with a particular genre. M. Kuraev himself refers to his novel as detective: it deals with the crime, the perpetrators of the crime and its victims are it’s heroes. But supernatural beings are identified as culprit of the crime. Therefore, this novel may be interpret as mythopoetic. The elements of the calendar, the eschatological myths are obvious in the novel “Montachka’s Mirrow”. But despite this fiction in the novel is imaginary. The main function of fiction in Kuraev’s novel is to emphasize the danger of State power for the people. Therefore, this novel could be considered as satirical work in which demonstrates only an abnormal. All elements of different genres (myth, satire, detective) are needed for solving the problem of relates between people and power, and all these elements are connected with expressing of author’s conception of reality. The author of the paper concludes about mainly philosophical character of M. Kuraev’s novel “Montachka’s Mirror”. So the question about the relationship between human been and the power and the implications of the subordination of the overwhelming force of the power are defined as having a key role in this work.
