ACCURACY OF SAMPLE-BASED FOREST INVENTORY OBTAINED FROM DIFFERENT PLOT CONFIGURATIONS

Abstract

Development of the methods of sample-based forest inventory is of great importance for Ukraine since it improves information support for forest sector. The paper presents the analysis of accuracy of different sampling approaches used for estimation of forest stands parameters. We established the study area in Kyiv region (Ukraine) and designed systematic grid covered forested area for sampling. The data were collected by Field-Map technology used for mapping the locations of all tally trees within circular plots of 500 m2 . As and option, we also sampled trees using angle-counting approach. Sampling trees accompanied by mapping allowed us to calculate the parameters of additional configurationы of sample plots: nested plots with different criteria for radius and size of trees to be sampled and angle-count plots that combine principles of fixed- and variable-area sampling. We compared estimated basal areas and stand density values with ones obtained on circular plots. The root square error and bias were rather small for nested plots with radius of 12.62 m. The random error that was not exceeded 1 m2‧ ha-1 was obtained also for truncated angle plots that had maximum radius of 12.62 m and basal area factor of 1. We concluded that accuracy of sampling was decreasing for small area plots or if basal area factor >1 was used. The angle counting approach was biased on average of 4 m2‧ ha-1 because of omission of some trees located a long distance from plot center. As result, we proposed for practical use the most reasonable configuration of sample plots.
