Anxiety Levels and Effects on Patient Healing in Patients with Spinal Trauma Diagnosis in Clinic of Neurosurgery

Abstract
Objectives: In diseases that develop suddenly in the course of normal life, require surgical treatment, psychological problems frequently develop right along with physiological balance disorders. These problems negatively affect the patient’s adaptation to the treatment process, quality of life, early return to active life and treatment costs. In this study, it was aimed to determine the level of anxiety in patients scheduled for surgery by the reason of emergency spinal trauma, to evaluate the change in surgical treatment process, treatment costs as a result of support treatments given to patients with anxiety. Materials and Methods: Fifty patients who underwent surgery due to spinal trauma between January 2017 and January 2019 were included in this study. The patients were evaluated with Beck Anxiety scale before surgery; this scale was repeated within one month of surgery. The sociodemographic information form was filled out based on the patient file for each patient. Fifty volunteers with similar sociodemographic characteristics were taken as comparison group. The data obtained were evaluated statistically. Results: Anxiety rates were higher in patients included in the study than in the normal population. Anxiety rates were particularly linked with the educational status, economic status of patients. Conclusion: The most common mood disorder in patients diagnosed with trauma after an unexpected accident in life is anxiety. Prevention of anxiety by detecting in time stops the progression of this disease and reduces its negative effects on physical healing. In this study, supportive therapies were given to spinal trauma patients who developed anxiety. In this way, the negative effects of the disease on the patient are reduced, the quality of life of the patient has been improved and the process of adaptation to treatment has been accelerated. While the life expectancies of the patient were affected in a positive way, labor losses were prevented in economic terms.
