Abstract
Piedmont dark chestnut soils of the Zailiysky Alatau, which have been under irrigation for more than 70 years, have undergone significant changes in comparison with the soils of the virgin soil and the reservoir. Studies have shown that prolonged irrigation under conditions of cultivated vegetable crops shows: an increase in the density of soil formation in the arable horizon, a deterioration in the soil structure, a decrease in water permeability of soils, an increase in the volumetric weight of the soil, and a decrease in the humus content. Accelerated mineralization creates a shortage of humic substances in dark chestnut soils under conditions of intensive farming and leads to a decrease in their fertility.
