Assessment of body posture and physical fitness of younger school-age children

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. Development of technology and the related changes in leisure activity that we observe today reduce the level of physical activity of children, which negatively affects the health and physical fitness of the young generation. The aim of our work was to assess the body posture in the frontal and transverse planes in 8-year-old children and to evaluate the relationship between the level of physical fitness and the quality of posture. Material and methods. The study included 280 children at the age of 8 from randomly chosen schools in Wrocław. For the assessment of the physical fitness level, values of height and body mass, the body mass index (BMI) value, and the measurements of thickness of 5 skin folds were used. The assessment of the body posture in the frontal and transverse planes was carried out with the use of a photogrammetric method. For the evaluation of physical fitness, the Eurofit Physical Fitness Test Battery was used. Results. Analysis of body posture in the frontal and transverse planes revealed presence of postural defects in a considerable percentage of the children examined. The changes most often pertained to the asymmetric position of the scapulas, the pelvis, and the spinous process line. Analysis of somatic features showed differences in body build depending on the quality of posture. Children with faulty body posture were lighter, taller and had less adipose tissue than their healthy peers. Children with correct posture were characterized by better physical fitness than children with faulty posture.Conclusions. The study showed differences in body build and physical fitness depending on the quality of posture. Children with asymmetrical body posture were characterized by a lower BMI value, less body fat deposition, and a lower level of physical fitness compared to their healthy peers.
