Biografia jako istotny element badań regionalnych
Journal Title: Biografistyka Pedagogiczna - Year 2016, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
Biographical studies are an important part of historiography. The main task of a biographer is to show external events, the spiritual life of individuals and the motives of their activities, with particular emphasis on the uniqueness and individuality of man. Regionalism is a socio-cultural movement, which usually has a scientific nature. It strives to preserve the intrinsic characteristics of regional culture and deepen the knowledge about it, as well as renew and develop this culture. It promotes positive characters, who transform the environment, initiate changes and improve society. Regional studies deal with human presence in all areas of life: language, culture, customs, politics and religion. A regionalist shows residents of a local community what is worthy of memory and protection in their environment; what served previous generations and may be useful to modern inhabitants; and what inspires pride and joy. Regionalism is meant to support us, because those who are no longer among us can still amaze us. When describing someone’s achievements, researchers begin to like those whose fates they study. They are interested in what kind of men hide behind these attainments. Researchers are often intimidated by the results of the individuals’ hard work, but at the same time want to find themselves spiritually among those who have left so much good to their descendants. Over time, scholars feel proximity, or even some kind of fraternity with them. They want to possess a piece of that good. People learn about themselves and the world on the basis of their own biographies and the local and general history. To be able to understand their place and role in the present, they must reach to the sources of humanity and their own ancestors. History can be preserved by making young people in particular familiar with their roots – provided that their teachers talk with them in the present about the past for the sake of the future.
