Blood flowinmandibularvessels–itsevaluationandprognosticimplications including Doppler techniques – review of literature

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2010, Vol 63, Issue 5

Abstract

Introduction: Alveolar bone atrophy, mainly in the mandible, is a common clinical problem in patients undergoing prosthetic treatment.Aim of the study: To analyze hypotheses concerning alveolar atrophy pathogenesis on the basis of literature, and to indicate methods which allow their verification. Conclusion: Histological analysis reveals a decrease of the lumen diameter of the inferior alveolar artery with age. However, there is no significant difference in the lumen diameter in dentate or partially dentate patients over 60 years of age. Arterial blood flowparameters (TAMV, PI) were measured with the use of a Doppler machine. Their statistically significant decrease was observed in the mental artery in case of patients over 60, and in the sublingual artery in patients over 65. Study results suggest a correlation between the patient’s age and blood flow reduction in mental and sublingual arteries. Doppler techniques have proved useful in measuring blood flow parameters in these arteries.
