Blood Pressure Response to Cold Pressure Test in Normal Young Healthy Subjects: A Prediction of Future Possibilities of Hypertension

Journal Title: Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology Advances - Year 2012, Vol 2, Issue 6

Abstract

Present study was carried out to study the effect of Cold pressure stimulus on Blood pressure in study group, to find out vascular hyper reactor in study group and to demonstrate future risk of hypertension in hyper reactors. Study was carried out on 35 Healthy medical students between the ages of 17-20 years. In present study blood pressure was measured in sitting position. Left hand of subjects were submerged in to cold water for 2 minutes and blood pressure was recorded from Right arm at 0,1,2,&3 minutes. Subjects having rise in systolic blood pressure of 15 mm of Hg or more from basal systolic blood pressure was considered as Systolic Hyper Reactors and subjects having rise in diastolic pressure of 10 mm of Hg or more from basal diastolic blood pressure was considered as Diastolic Hyper Reactors. In present study, Systolic hyper reactivity was observed in 8.57% subjects. Diastolic hyper reactivity was observed in 42.86 % subjects. This study suggest that there is a role of effect of stress on blood pressure and those who have high blood pressure after cold pressure test may have increased risk of development of hypertension in future.
