Abstract
The development of Research Groups (RG) gain force in front of the expansion of the scientific production incentive. This way, this article have the objective to introduce the characteristics of groups from the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG) registered on the Research Groups of Brazil Directory (DGP/CNPq). It is a quantitative research, descriptive and exploratory. The data was collected at the database of the DGP/CNPq and tabulated at the Microsoft Excel software. It presents the characteristics of: a) RG, from Knowledge Areas and Academic Unities of FURG; b) groups temporality; c) quantification of research lines and; d) RG members analysis. It considerate the Research Groups thematic essential on the understating of scientific communication.
