Abstract

The article contains some analyses of frequency changes in the names used in the ambience of Catholics in Świr parish which is situated on the multilingual PolishBelorussian-Lithuanian border. The research is conducted on the background of social and cultural transformations that took place in this region in the second half of the 20th century. Geopolitical transformations which affected the inhabitants of Świr after World War II caused the cultural context for this community to cease being associated with the Polish culture. Instead it started being associated with the Soviet one, a characteristic feature of which was the domination of the Russian language, atheism and mass culture that were common to the entire Soviet Union. The outcome of social and political transformations was the necessity of adjusting to the altered living conditions. One of these alterations was a modification in the repertoire of names. In relatively short time Polish names given in the first half of the 20th century became replaced by the names connected with Russian traditions. The processes which took place in the nominal anthroponymy should be interpreted as the outcome of the integration with the dominant Soviet culture. The analysis of Świr parishioners’ names born in the years 1920–1940, 1960– 1980 and 1990-2000 very clearly shows the transformation of language and identity in the faithful of the Catholic Church in the area. The church of the Polish language transformed the face of the Church, which is dominated by the Belarusian language and national identity.
